It is anticipated that ETIAS application and approval will be required commencing in the last quarter of 2026. The purpose of the new ETIAS process is to simplify and modernize border management, enhance the security of travelers and citizens, and facilitate easier travel both into and within participating countries.
Initial Timeline: The ETIAS was initially planned for 2025, but has been delayed.
Current Timeline: The EU now anticipates the ETIAS to be operational in the last quarter of 2026.
Transitional/Grace Period: There will be a transitional period of at least six months after the launch, during which travelers will be able to enter without an ETIAS, provided they meet all other entry requirements.
Mandatory Requirement: After the transitional period, an ETIAS will be mandatory for all travelers seeking entry to the 30 European countries that require it, who are from countries exempt from short-stay visa requirements.
